The fashion industry is constantly changing and evolving.  Especially for celebrities who are constantly under public scrutiny. A very common dress in the 50s was the pencil skirt, and the poodle skirt.  Pencil skirts were tight, long, went under the knee and were completely straight.  There were also dresses in the 50s that were tight, long, and went past the knee in a straight line.
