50s Dress And Common Fashion Trends
It is during the 50s that dress codes and various ways to wear so as to impress came about. It was during this era that women would show off their lovely curves plus a little skin and men would reveal their bad side. It is here that fashion became recognizable and looking good was a must for everyone, whether they liked it or not. Some of the common fashion trends and 50s dress codes were as discussed below:
Leather Jacket: One of the common pieces of clothing among the men was the leather jacket, and it had to be a black one. There was a common leather jacket that most men went for: it had to be black and had an eagle on the back. Whenever any man was seen wearing this kind of jacket, he was known to be cool and this gave the ladies the impression that the person wearing it is a ‘bad-boy’. The ‘bad-boy’ look was one used to attract the ladies. To add to the macho style, the leather jacket collar had to be worn up so that the ‘bad boy’ look would be complete.
Gloves: Gloves were a common accessory the 1950’s, especially among the women. Sometimes, men would wear gloves with their leather jackets, but they had to be a matching pair of black gloves. In those days seeing a woman without gloves, is like seeing our current celebrities without make up, which is very rare. Gloves were worn to fancy restaurants, parties and special occasions. The gloves came in all lengths and patterns. The most popular type of gloves worn by the women were white short gloves.
Skirts: The common skirts in the 1950 era were poodle skirts and pencil skirts. These were a popular choice among women. Poodle skirts were wide skirts that had a patched pooled on the right bottom part of the skirt. Pencil skirts were also popular; they were long below the knee and very tight, straight just like a pencil.
50s Figured Dress: In the 50s, to complete a certain dress or skirt, it required that the lady wore heels, gloves and beautiful dresses. The dresses worn had to specifically bring out the lady’s figure so that she could be presentable. In some cases, girdles were usually worn underneath dresses so the women can show off their bodies. Older women wore revealing dresses.
50s Shoes Fashion: During the 1950’s, the shoes that were worn were simple and plain. Some of the options that people had were ballet slippers, plain black and white shoes that resembled sneakers or the women loved to wear stilettos or spiked heels.
