Dress in the 50’s compared to today

The fashion industry is constantly changing and evolving.  Especially for celebrities who are constantly under public scrutiny. Whenever a celebrity is attending an award celebration or red carpet function, the public not only wants to know who is there and what they did, but what they are wearing, who made it and how it looks.

Modern dresses are similar to dresses seen in the 1950s. This is because many designs were inspired by the dresses common in the 50s. The prom dress is a fine example of this.  Prom became common in the 50s.  So many designers started making dresses for young girls to wear to their proms. The prom dresses of the 50s had a very ‘poufy’ look that is currently being seen in dresses worn by girls to their proms today.

In the 1950s girls were anxious to start showing off their bodies, and boys were anxious to show their bad sides in their reach for independence. Fashion came into existence and popular fashions would be tried and copied by everyone. Grease comes to mind with this.

A very common dress in the 50s was the pencil skirt, and the poodle skirt.  Pencil skirts were tight, long, went under the knee and were completely straight.  There were also dresses in the 50s that were tight, long, and went past the knee in a straight line. The poodle skirts, however, were large and wide, angling steadily out towards the hem.  Both styles were very popular.

The 50s also saw the use of leather in fashion.  The boys preferred the leather. it could not be just any leather, but a ‘cool’ one. Leather jackets were worn with the collars turned up, and the boys believed that the only way to attract a girl was to have one of these leather jackets.

Gloves were another popular accessory in the 50s.  Women were rarely seen without gloves in the 50s, it would be like seeing a celebrity without makeup today.  Gloves were worn to fancy restaurants, parties, and any other special occasion a young woman was invited to. The gloves came in many lengths and patterns. However, the most popular were white short gloves.

Lastly, the shoes worn were actually very plain and simple in their design.  Ballet slippers, and plain black and white shoes that looked like sneakers were very popular in the fashion industry of the 1950s.  Women also wore spike high heels and stilettos in the 1950s.

50s dresses then and now

There’s nothing quite like the fashion industry. Just look at the world of celebrities. Ask someone why they are watching an award show and many times you’ll hear that they want to see who’s wearing what? Check the fashion and gossip magazine the next week and it will will be focused around fashion versus the awards themselves.  Many times an entire article will be based around one particular outfit that stole the show.

Fashion from today and yesterday are actually quite similiar. This should come as no surprise as fashion designers get their inspiration many times from fashions of times gone by. Inspiration has to come from somewhere and why not from our days of old. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing. Expressing it in fashion is especially satisfying.

When it comes to dresses you’ll find women young and old wanting to stand out. The prom or an evening cocktail party gives the perfect reason to find a vintage dress.  In the 50s , women took special care to look just right. More so than today as a matter of fact. Figure flattering pencil skirts or the ever popular full skirted dresses were especially coveted.

Another item that was very popular back in the 50s that still is today is leather. Yes , the men mainly wore leather but the daring ladies gave it a go too. Also, gloves were very much worn in the 50s. Something not seen so much today except for warmth in the winter. A shame too because this fasion accessory is also very flattering.  Why any vintate movie you watch today will surely show a woman putting her gloves on to go out for the day.

We of course cannot forget shoes. Ah, the ever so popular woman’s shoe.  Yes some were quite simple but as you’ve probably noticed , some were more elaborate and absoutely fabulous. It’s no wonder they are heavily sought after today as well as dresses.
